2011 Earthquake/Tsunami Archives

The following are externally hosted archives (which were originally on Picasa Web Albums (PWA); PWA was shutdown and replaced by Google Photos in May 2016). I previous had ongoing coverage of the aftermath of this major event on the portal that I ran from 2005-2015. For videos, I purposely chose NOT to host them on YouTube. Why? Ads. Google/YouTube inserting their advertisement garbage even on non-monetized channels AND on content meant to be archived for educational/historical purposes like that is abhorrent.

Amateur and professional footage archive #1 (click the ⓘ for description/geo-data information)
2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami News Coverage archive #1 (click the ⓘ for descriptions)
2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami News Coverage archive #2 (click the ⓘ for descriptions)
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Photos (media credentials preserved; click the ⓘ to display that information)

Note: While I am mostly de-Googling, I am leaving these archives in place (original upload dates + map data). I also stopped maintaining these in 2012 even though I have well over a hundred more eyewitness videos that people later released over the years (it gets mentally debilitating watching those types of clips for long periods). I may add those to the archive (but without annotations/geo-data) prior to the 15th year anniversary (on March 11, 2026).

Google also made changes to their Photos AUP (acceptable use policy) and Google Photo’s API (specifically the Picker API) earlier in 2025 since there were many developers writing new user facing gallery style frontends to host their own photos on a site. Google flatly does not want people to be using Google Photos as a CDN for hosting images/videos in this manner (many projects have since been depreciated as a result which is also a good thing if it means more not using Google for their media to begin with).
